Recreation Aide: 

  • Pay Rate: $17.04 Hourly
  • Minimum Qualifications: Enrollment as a sophomore or higher in high school. Some customer service experience is desirable. Minors must possess a work permit and observe all legal requirements for working minors. Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid CPR and First Aid certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Job Summary: To assist with planning and conducting recreation events; and to provide clerical support to an assigned supervisor. This is the entry level in the part-time Recreation technical class series. Incumbents assist recreation staff with planning and conducting events and activities, in order to gain practical experience in a recreation setting. Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor.  

Recreation Leader:

  • Pay Rate: $19.38 - $23.80 Hourly
  • Minimum Qualifications: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. One year of recreation experience is desired. Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid CPR and First Aid certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Job Summary: To plan and conduct recreation activities; to set-up and take-down rooms and equipment as needed for recreation activities; to perform clerical tasks in support of recreation programs; and to provide technical support to an assigned supervisor. This is the journey level in the single-level part-time Recreation Leader class. Incumbents may be assigned to develop and lead recreation activities, supervise or monitor program participants, and provide facility oversight. The Recreation Leader class family includes part-time Recreation Leader and Recreation Aide. Work in this class is distinguished from that of a Recreation Aide by the addition of lead responsibilities and greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to work. Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor.

What We Do:
The Community Services Department provides exceptional recreational, educational, cultural, and social services to the community to enhance and maintain a high quality of life in Beverly Hills. The Department is comprised of two key areas: Recreation and Parks, and the Beverly Hills Public Library. The Recreation and Parks Division is responsible for providing recreation and enrichment programs for all ages, parks and community center programming and management, and community events, sports and aquatics activities. The Division also manages the Joint Powers Agreement with the Beverly Hills Unified School District and operates the historic Greystone Mansion and Estate. The Division maintains diverse and innovative recreation and cultural programming and services for the community. 

Selection Process:

Conviction History

The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. Disaster Service Workers: All City of Beverly Hills employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. 

 

Major Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Recreation Aide:

  • Assist with planning, conducting, and evaluating recreational activities. 
  • Supervise program participants. 
  • Perform clerical duties including typing and filing, as required. 
  • Assist new or existing staff in learning departmental practices and protocols, methods and procedures. 
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service. 
  • Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect. 
  • Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication. 
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Recreation Leader:

  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate recreation activities for children, teens, and/or adults.
  • Instruct program participants in recreation activities including crafts, games, team and individual sports, theater, music, gardening, and other program activities.
  • Develop program materials for related recreation activities as necessary.
  • Serve as scorekeeper and timekeeper for adult sports league games.
  • Enforce City and league rules and policies; maintain a safe and secure program environment for participants and staff.
  • Supervise or monitor program participants as applicable.
  • Communicate with supervisory program staff regarding participant behavior, injuries, and other relevant matters; document program details and incidents.
  • Maintain files, rosters, forms, and program documents as necessary.
  • Perform field/gym/room set-up and breakdown.
  • Ensure that all equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared and maintained.
  • Perform class registration and facility booking duties.
  • Notify supervisor of necessary supplies for recreation activities.
  • Perform customer service functions including reception, answering phones, and providing information to a wide range of customers.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions related to recreation programming.
  • Assist new or existing staff in learning departmental practices and protocols, methods, and procedures.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Foster an environment that embraces diversity, integrity, trust, and respect.
  • Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Recreation Aide:
Knowledge of:

  • Rules and techniques of youth sports, arts and crafts, or other recreational activities.
  • First Aid procedures.

Ability to:

  • Assist with the planning and presentation of a variety of recreational activities.
  • Perform general clerical duties such as word processing or filing.
  • Learn principles and techniques of recreation programming.
  • Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
  • Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software.
  • Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
  • Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Physical Demands:

On a continuous basis, sit at desk for long periods of time or stand at public counter; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone; write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.


Recreation Leader:
Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of customer service.
  • Principles, techniques, and rules of competitive and non-competitive activities and/or recreation programs.
  • Methods of scorekeeping, timekeeping, and officiating for assigned sports.
  • Park and facility rules.

Ability to:

  • Motivate and lead other program staff, volunteers, and participants.

Must have the physical strength and agility to lift, carry, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis; bend and twist in all directions, and squeeze with arms and hands.

Experience and Training: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.   A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Some customer service experience is desirable.
