Recreation Coordinator

The City of Martinez Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated and team-oriented Recreation Coordinator who is passionate about serving the community by creating meaningful, engaging, and inclusive recreation experiences. This position plays a vital role in planning, coordinating, and promoting recreation programs and services for seniors (50+), adults, and inclusive recreation participants.
About the role: The Recreation Coordinator, under general supervision, will be responsible for developing innovative programming, overseeing daily operations, supervising part-time staff, and leading marketing and promotional efforts for the Martinez Senior Center, programs, and events. The successful candidate will bring creativity, enthusiasm, and strong organizational skills to deliver high-quality programs that enhance community well-being and foster positive connections.

Definition:
Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and supervises services, programs and activities, and events of the Martinez aquatics facilities and/or a board range of recreational programs and community events. Responsibilities include preparing program budgets, monitoring expenditures, and providing administrative support to the Recreation Supervisor. The Recreation Coordinator is expected to provide leadership and oversight for assigned recreation and community service programs, including the supervision of temporary and seasonal staff. Performs related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:A Recreation Coordinator focuses on the operational details of assigned programs, activities, and events within a recreation section, while a Recreation Supervisor has broader responsibility for managing multiple programs and staff, potentially across an entire division. The Recreation Coordinator develops and implements program curricula and schedules, coordinates logistics for facility reservations, equipment procurement, and volunteer assignments, supervises part-time seasonal staff, manages program registration, tracks attendance, and evaluates participation, ensures compliance with safety protocols and departmental policies, and provides direct customer service to participants and the public. The supervisor also has a larger span of control and may be responsible for more complex projects and assignments requiring specialized skills or knowledge.
Supervision received and exercised:
Employees in the Recreation Coordinator classification report to the Recreation Supervisor or his/her designee and provide oversight of temporary recreation staff.Representative Duties

•Plan, coordinate, implement, supervise, and evaluate instructional fee classes, teen activities, special events, rentals, excursions for youth and adults, inclusive programs, community services, and recreational programs for assigned age groups..
•Monitor day-to-day operations of programs and events, including making site visits, handling and resolving complaints not requiring the attention of a
supervisor and ensuring that programs and events have required materials and supplies.
•Recruit, train, and supervise temporary and seasonal recreation staff, including instruction in CPR, first aid, and department policies and procedures.
• Enforce safety and operating procedures and provide for maintenance needs including compliance with health and safety codes and building codes.
•Assist in the development, recommendation and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the assigned area(s).
•Provide support to their supervisor for new programming in the areas of aquatics, recreation, special needs, arts, sports, community services, and expression, special events and respond to new requests and proposals.
•Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned program budget.
•Educate and enforce the Division’s Code of Conduct, including behavioral management of participants and community members.
•Meet with community groups, schools, and organizations to plan, develop and schedule inter-related programs and/or events.
•Network with schools, local organizations, and other appropriate groups to develop and provide creative recreation programs for the community.
•Maintain records of events and operations.
•Prepare activity publicity fliers and advertisements, prepares or assists in the preparation of the tri-annual brochure of recreation classes, services and activities.
•Prepare various reports.
•Conduct surveys to determine community recreational needs.
•Possess adequate written communication skills to perform job related tasks.
•May be required to present staff reports to the Park & Recreation Commission.
•Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Education/Experience

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Minimum Qualifications:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in recreation administration, physical education, leisure services or a related field and one (1) year full-time or its equivalent of recreation experience;
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as outlined. Additional qualifying recreation experience and relevant professional certifications may be substituted for the required education on a four-year basis.
Professional Certifications: Possession of Red Cross Standard Certification in First Aid, Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, and Water Safety Certification, as applicable to assigned area. Possession of a valid California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination and background check.
Knowledge of:

SELECTION PROCESS:

SUPPLEMENT QUESTIONNAIRE:
All applicants are required to complete the questionnaire. This questionnaire will be used throughout the examination process to assist in determining each applicant's qualifications and acceptability for the position. A select number of the most experienced and best qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an oral board interview weighted at 100%, the pass point of the exam is 70%. Applicants must pass all examination components in order to qualify for placement on the eligibility list.

Employees in this position are subject to a 6 month probationary period.
