Maintenance Worker I/II

Description:

The City of Ventura is hiring! We have an immediate vacancy for the position of Maintenance Worker I/II with the City’s Public Works Department.  

The current vacancy is within the Environmental Sustainability Division (Streets).  

The Maintenance Worker I/II works under general supervision and performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled heavy manual work, alone or as a member of a crew, in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, wastewater systems, storm drains, water systems, graffiti abatement or related public works and utility functions.

Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Streets: Shovels earth or debris using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, picks and sledges. Performs a variety of maintenance tasks. Operates simple pneumatic tools, spreads and tamps paving material or gravel. Loads and unloads trucks; cuts brush; removes weeds; cleans culverts, drains and ditches. Maintains and repairs streets, sidewalks and curbs. Lays rock base, shovels and rakes hot asphalt. Mixes and pours concrete. Assists in the installation of street signs and traffic safety painting. Operates in the installation of street signs and traffic safety painting. Operates a variety of mechanized equipment including but not limited to, skip loaders, dump trucks, and 90 lb. jackhammers. Maintains equipment to ensure proper working order. Performs other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry-level class in the series. Incumbents in this classification receive on-the-job training, specific day-to-day direction and are closely supervised. Positions in this series are flexibly staffed to the Maintenance Worker II classification, and incumbents are expected to advance to the next level at the end of a one-year probationary period.

Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level in the maintenance worker series. The Incumbents are expected to know all the duties and tasks, to apply learned principles and techniques, exercising independent judgment and initiative to well-defined assignments in the field, with general supervision. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

Salary and Benefits

The City offers a compensation package that includes both a generous salary and excellent benefits! 

Salary: $25.02 - $33.43 Hourly DOQ

Qualifications:

Maintenance Worker I: Six months of construction, maintenance or related work experience.

Maintenance Worker II: A combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to one year as a Maintenance Worker I (18 months related experience).

License: Both levels: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required upon employment. Within 6 months of employment, incumbent is required to obtain and, thereafter maintain, the following licenses:

Streets: California Class A driver license with the following endorsements/restrictions: Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restrictions - No Endorsement. (Pursuant to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, drug testing is required.)

Facilities and Transit: California Class C driver license required upon employment.

A pre-employment medical examination is required before appointment is made.
