Recreation Services Coordinator

Description:

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Services Manager, responsible for planning, implementing and overseeing City sponsored special events and recreation activities at community and aquatic centers, park and/or recreation areas for a variety of age groups.  May exercise functional and technical supervision over lower level personnel and is able to work successfully in a team environment.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Recreation Services Coordinator is an entry level, full-time classification responsible for coordinating and directing the operations, services, staff, and activities of an assigned recreation program area. Performance requires ability to work independently with initiative and discretion within established guidelines. The Recreation Services Coordinator may be the first point of contact for internal and external customers seeking support and information.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May exercise functional and technical supervision over lower level staff, volunteers, and contracted instructors or referees.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assist in the development and implementation of goals, annual work plans, policies and procedures for assigned City facilities and services.
  • Create, plan, organize, schedule and lead a general program of recreational activities and special events at City parks, community center, aquatic centers, or recreation area for a variety of age groups of youth and adult programs. i.e. sports, seniors, aquatics. Recommends changes and implements management decisions.
  • Participate in the selection, training, coordination and supervision of lower level staff and volunteers.
  • Prepares promotional and advertising materials including calendars, news releases and brochures. Recruit program participants through effective use of promotion and marketing techniques. 
  • Develop and maintain a master calendar of activities and events; confirming the use of City facilities with scheduled groups taking into account advance setup and post function take down. 
  • Coordinate activities and resources of community groups, school district, parent-teacher organizations and other government entities to assess and provide the social and recreational needs for City residents.
  • Confers with individuals requiring support services and assists them as required, i.e., completing forms or referring them to required service area, as necessary.
  • Assist with grant research and writing, fund raising and sponsorship development activities.
  • Conduct statistical research, prepare oral and written reports, and maintain appropriate records.
  • Attend and participate in organizational and community meetings as necessary; stay current on issues relative to community services; respond to and resolve community and organizational inquiries, problems and complaints and referring them to required service area, as necessary.
  • Monitor developments related to community service matters, evaluate their impact on City operations and recommend and implement procedural and program improvements.
  • May assist with the development and administration of Division budget.
  • Serves as Division representative with external organizations; attends and/or speaks at meetings, community and professional functions, and conferences as assigned. May include presenting to and interact with Commissioners, City Council, County Supervisor, and other dignitaries.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance. May be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:

Education:     A high school diploma or the equivalent.  Coursework from an accredited college or university in recreation, public administration, sociology or a related field is required.

AND

Experience:    Two years of increasing responsible experience in the administration of recreation programs or a closely related field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and good driving record. 
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain upon hire, American Red Cross Certificate in Standard First Aid and CPR.

     

Knowledge of:

Objectives, principles and philosophy of recreation, leisure and community services programs including the recreation and social needs of this community for various age groups. Principles and practices of program planning, development, implementation, administration and evaluation. Program promotion and marketing and effective public relations techniques and methods. First aid methods and safety practices for recreation programs. Modern office equipment including a computer and applicable software. Methods and techniques for basic report preparation and writing, including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing and keep accurate records.

Ability to:

Provide leadership, training and supervise personnel, volunteers and participants. Evaluate and coordinate numerous programs and staff in a team environment. Maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates and participants. Operate programs within budgetary limitations. Work independently in the absence of direct supervision while exercising sound, independent judgment within policy and procedural guidelines. Courteously respond to community issues, concerns and needs. Conduct recreational activities, maintaining appropriate levels of order, safety and participant and observer behaviors.

Skill to:

Effectively operate a motor vehicle on City streets.
