Aquatic Maintenance Technician

DEFINITION
 
Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks for the City’s pool maintenance program; ensures aquatics facilities are available for use and consistently maintained in a safe and clean condition; maintains pool operational equipment such as pumps, motors, and filters; maintains pool chemistry, and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
 
Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.  
 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This journey-level classification is responsible for performing the full range of aquatics facility maintenance functions. Performance requires the ability to work independently with initiative and discretion within established guidelines. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS
 
Knowledge of:

  • Methods and techniques used in the operation, repair, and maintenance of swimming pools, equipment, and facilities.
  • Operational characteristics of pool equipment, such as pumps, motors, chemical feeders, underwater lights, and related apparatus.
  • Principles and practices of pool water testing and proper chemical water treatments.
  • Principles and practices of building and grounds maintenance and associated trades such as carpentry or masonry work.
  • Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws pertaining to the work including health and safety codes.
  • Purposes and uses of a variety of equipment, power tools, hand tools, and other equipment.
  • Principles and practices of work safety.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively interacting with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

 
Ability to:

  • Perform the full range of semi-skilled and skilled aquatics facility maintenance. 
  • Provide proper maintenance and inspections of aquatics facilities and equipment as required by regulations. 
  • Operate and maintain pool mechanical equipment including, but not limited to, pumps, motors, water filtration equipment chlorine generators and pool vacuums.
  • Maintain water chemistry in compliance with health and safety requirements.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply all relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. 
  • Safely operate power-driven construction tools and equipment. 
  • Ensure the safety of patrons, colleagues, and self in the performance of duties.
  • Obtain certifications as required by OSHA/CalOSHA and provided by the City, to perform assigned duties.
  • Perform minor building, custodial, and grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles, equipment (including forklift), power tools, and other equipment in a safe manner.
  • Assist in selecting materials and estimating material and labor costs for a job or project.
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, maps, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to effectively perform the work.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 

 
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by specialized training in aquatics facility and pool maintenance or a related field.

Experience:
 

  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible aquatics facility maintenance experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or successful acquisition within the probationary period, a valid Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or similar to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or successful acquisition within the probationary period, a valid certification in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED to be maintained throughout employment.
