Summer Camp Counselor

The Summer Camp Counselor reports to the Recreation Coordinator, and in the absence of a Recreation Coordinator, may report to a Senior Recreation Leader. The position is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading a variety of recreation activities. Typical activities are planned around a theme and include but are not limited to the following: environmental education, arts, crafts, songs, sports, games, contests, and special events for Redwood Grove Campers.
This position is also responsible for maintaining communication with the public, promoting, and ensuring safety procedures are followed. The Summer Camp Counselor must be able to work with fellow recreation leaders to assist in the implementation of recreation activities and perform other related duties as needed and assigned. This includes department wide special events, teen programs, preschool age programs, camps, administrative office duties, serve as facility attendant, and provide support with senior (Adult 50+) programs.

Examples of Duties

- Plan theme-based activities which may include environmental education, arts, crafts, sports, games, contests, and special events for participants in a camp environment.
- Assist with organizing and implementing recreation programs.
- Review and analyze program effectiveness to provide recommendations to Senior Recreation Leader
- Ensure equipment and supplies are available for planned indoor/outdoor recreational activities. This may include moving equipment and supplies from one location to another.
- Lead and direct large groups of participants in recreation activities.
- Speak effectively in a public setting with adults and children.
- Maintain effective relationships with participants, parents and community members.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships and work cooperatively with other city staff, while maintaining the city’s high standards.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Engage and motivate participants in recreation activities.
- Follow safety procedures.
- Report problems or hazards which may occur with children, parents, or equipment to on-site Senior Recreation Leader or Recreation Coordinator.
- Respond safely and efficiently in emergency situations.
- Independently initiate and complete work activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of information, both written and spoken.
- May work independently supervising participants.

Minimum Qualifications
-
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
EXPERIENCE:
- Recreation Leaders must be at least 16 years of age unless otherwise specified.
- Volunteer experience in recreation, outdoor education, sports and/or crafts preferred.
- First aid and CPR certification must be obtained prior to working the first day with participants.
