Recreation Services Supervisor

Description:

Under direction of a Recreation Services Administrator, supervises, organizes and coordinates a variety of services, including recreational, educational, fitness classes and wellness programs and special events for residents; evaluates and monitors program and services measures, including attendance, implementation costs and resident response; prepares and maintains activity logs, records and attendance, participation, and enrollment; assists in the development of educational programs; coordinates the recruitment and scheduling of monitors; ensures maintenance of recreation facilities, equipment and materials; performs related work as required.

 

Examples of Duties

 

  • Supervises, coordinates and administers programs, activities, classes, facilities, recreation, events, and seasonal festivities for City of Cerritos residents and community members.
  • Plans, designs and delivers specialized services and activities targeted to resident age and interests; reviews and gathers data on activity participation rates and attendance; records and reports information for continual planning purposes.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for information and issues from community members; refers public to appropriate staff and resources; documents and addresses community service requests; communicates and recommends modifications to procedures, practices and policies.
  • Communicates and engages patrons, instructors, and volunteers; recruits, selects and trains volunteers; assigns and delegates volunteer activities and ensures proper program coverage.
  • Hires, trains, and evaluates part time and full time staff; develops, plans, implements staff trainings/in-services educating staff on recreation trends and service needs of the community.
  • Responds to and manages questions, concerns and conflicts; identifies issues; resolves problems and seeks solutions.
  • Develops and drafts records, reports and activity logs; prepares and presents information on offerings; designs promotional materials, as needed.
  • Maintains and monitors accurate records, including contracts, purchasing, expenditures, planning, and service and program evaluation documents.
  • Plans, coordinates and implements City-wide special events.
  • Maintains accurate records, data and information regarding program participation, and residency.  
  • Monitors effectiveness of recreation and fitness programs; develops, implements and evaluates activities, special events, recreational and educational programs.
  • Opens and secures facilities for activities and programs.
  • Monitors class registration module; oversees and ensures operation of reservation/registration systems.
  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the division's program budgets.
  • Promotes and ensures proper and safe use of facilities and equipment.
  • Drive to multiple city facilities and partner organizations for programs, events and services.

  • May work a varying schedule of hours which may include nights and weekends.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and practices of staff supervision, and performance evaluation.
  • Methods and procedures of organizing, conducting, and supervising recreational and educational programs for a diverse population.
  • Report and Data Collection methods and records management.
  • Reservation/registration computer systems.
  • Payment management, records keeping, and retail practices.

Ability to:

  • Develop and organize programs and special events for a diverse population.
  • Assess the needs/trends of the community.
  • Prepare accurate records and thorough reports.
  • Establish and maintain excellent relations with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain a high degree of professionalism and leadership.
  • Supervise and train staff and volunteers.
  • Work in a team environment and promote City and Division policies in a positive manner.
  • Drive a motor vehicle.
Qualifications:

Typical Qualifications

 

  • Education: Associates degree in recreation, public administration, or related subject.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience in community services, senior services, recreational services, or related work environment.

  • Work is performed indoors at City Hall or a recreation facility and outdoors.
  • Standing and walking on level and uneven/slippery surfaces, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Climbing ladders and inclines, twisting, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, grasping, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds.  
  • Exposure to inclement weather.
  • Drive a City vehicle on business.  
  • Mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed
     

Required Licenses and Certificates:

  • Possess a valid California class “C” driver’s license.  
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification is required within the first three years of employment.
