The City of Pomona's Community Services Division is excited to announce the addition of a Recreation Coordinator – Senior Programs to our team, aiming to better serve Pomona's older adult population. The Community Services Division takes pride in providing a year-round elderly nutrition program, along with enrichment and recreational services to Pomona's seniors. As the Recreation Coordinator for Senior Programs, you'll have the chance to enrich the lives of individuals, families, and the community at large. This role allows you to leverage your creativity, continuously seeking cost-effective and innovative nutrition and recreation activities to meet community needs. Under the guidance of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator will plan, develop, administer, and evaluate the City's senior citizen programs. This includes the development of enrichment activities, partnerships, resources, classes, and events benefiting seniors, as well as ensuring grant, contractual, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation or a related field. 
  • Three years of responsible recreation program experience including some supervisory experience.
  • Spanish bilingual skills are highly desirable.

License or Certificate

  • Possession of, or must obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Must obtain CPR, First Aid, and AED Certificates within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must possess a Safe Food Handling Certificate within six (6) months of employment.
  • Possession of a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certificate is desirable

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

 

  • Plan, organize, schedule, implement, and direct comprehensive programs and activities, including children's services, youth and adult classes, cultural arts programs, special events, sports and aquatic programs, tournaments, and senior citizen programs. 
  • Prepare funding recommendations and assist in the preparation of the budget; prepare budget for specific activity and/or program; assist in budget implementation; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for needed supplies and equipment; monitor and control expenditures. 
  • Direct and participate in the development of events publicity, including the design, preparation, and distribution of press releases, brochures, pamphlets, flyers, and printed schedules. 
  • Respond to inquiries or requests for service from community interest groups. 
  • Participate in interviewing and in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; supervise, schedule, and evaluate part-time and contract employees; work with employees to correct deficiencies. 
  • Coordinate program registration, including the collection and accounting of monies; maintain files and records; prepare and submit budget recommendations for the allocation of personnel, equipment, and supplies for program activity areas.
  • Evaluate program attendance, participant responses and cost, and make recommendations regarding the continuance or cancellation of programs; create new programs.
  • Follow preventive maintenance practices to properly care for facilities and equipment. 
  • Assist in establishing departmental goals consistent with the needs of the City. 
  • Maintain records and monitor requirements established by County, State, and Federal funding sources. 
  • Establish and maintain a quality customer service program. 
  • Perform a wide variety and range of responsibilities including special assignments, facility management, fund raising, grant writing, and program development and implementation. 
  • Act as community liaison to encourage public participation. 
  • Schedule, coordinate, and direct assigned City recreation facilities; inspect recreation areas and facilities to ensure proper and safe use of equipment 
  • Seek sponsorships for major special events. 
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints; identify problem areas and direct remedial actions to be taken; make recommendations regarding matters of general policy. 
  • Participate in long-term planning to assess future recreation needs; research new operational techniques, methods, and equipment; make recommendations for purchase or implementation. 
  • Compile reports and research demographics. 
  • Supervise the coordination and implementation of recreation, leisure, and promotional activities and seasonal, public relations, and special events. 
  • Represent the City at business and civic gatherings and meetings. 
  • Recruit and train volunteers as required. 
  • Assist in monitoring program compliance with laws, rules, and regulations related to provision of community services.  
  • Recommend, create, and implement creative and culturally diverse programs based on new developments in the recreation and/or senior citizen field. 
  • Provide information and referrals to the public, school officials, and community groups about programs being offered. 
  • Coordinate and maintain rentals, contracts, and scheduling of all City facilities. 
  • Maintain records and prepare reports related to assigned areas of responsibility; review, process, and approve contractual and staff payroll; maintain records for registrations and fees collected. 
  • Establish and maintain an inventory of supplies and materials for assigned areas of responsibility; purchase necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Serve as ambassador for the City.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:  Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, and lift up to 40 lbs.; exposure to outdoors; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for evening meetings and events scheduled during non-working hours.
