Recreation Coordinator

Description:

Under the direction of the Recreation Services Manager or the Facility Supervisor, coordinates a comprehensive program of recreation classes, camps, sport leagues, excursions, teens/inclusion programming, senior programs and special events primarily in the following locations: Calabasas Community Center, Calabasas Senior Center, Calabasas Tennis & Swim and De Anza Park. Recreation Coordinators may be required to assist with the above programs at any City facility other than those listed. 

The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

 

  • Assists in the recruitment of contract instructors and volunteers.
  • Participates in the development of program content.
  • Assists with the production of a tri-annual recreation brochure.
  • Coordinates and evaluates recreation classes and activities.
  • Acts as liaison to advisory committees, community area residents and City administration.
  • Recruits, trains, schedules and supervises recreation leaders.
  • Assists with the preparation, evaluation, and monitoring of program budgets.
  • Participates in the development and production of special recreation events.
  • Provides staff support as needed to maintain a full-service recreation program.
  • Ensures the distribution of publicity and promotion for department and community programs and events.
  • Develops and produces publicity and promotional material for programs, activities & special events.
  • Recruits, trains, schedule, and supervise lifeguards and aquatics programs.
  • Implements insurance programs for contractors and instructors.
  • Coordinates sports, events, activities, rentals and programs.
  • Supervises state licensed camp programs.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices and philosophy of recreation and community services
  • Program coordination.
  • Marketing.
  • Customer service.


Skill and Ability to:

  • Maintain effective working relationships with participants, community groups, co-workers, and the public.
  • Prepare clear, concise reports and maintain records.
  • Operate a personal computer and related software proficiently, such as graphics, spreadsheets and registration.
  • Use excellent telephone and interpersonal communication skills.
Qualifications:

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be a Bachelor's degree in leisure studies, recreation administration, physical education, or a related field and two years of paid experience in full or part time recreation work.

Licenses and Certificates:

Possession of a valid California driver's license, live-scan fingerprinting clearance, and current First Aid and CPR certifications are required; possession of a WSI card and related water safety and pool management certificates are desirable.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
  • Requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.   Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
  • Requires the ability to stand for long periods.
  • Performs lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • May be required to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.
  • May be required to attend periodic evening meetings and/or to travel within and out of City boundaries to attend meetings.
  • May be required to work at a video display terminal for prolonged periods.
  • May be required to work evenings or weekends.
