The Recreation Program Supervisor oversees the Point Vicente Interpretive Center—a community gem nestled along the scenic Palos Verdes coastline. This unique facility features a museum highlighting the natural and cultural history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a gift shop, beautiful park grounds, a native plant garden, and one of Southern California’s premier gray whale watching locations. The site also offers a stunning banquet room with breathtaking ocean views, available to rent for meetings, weddings, and private events.

This facility serves as the hub for the dedicated Los Serenos de Point Vicente docent volunteer organization that offers educational programming, guided tours and nature walks. The Recreation Program Supervisor will play a key role in supporting and coordinating with this vital group.

In addition to overseeing the Interpretive Center, this position is also responsible for managing events at Founders Park, a picturesque blufftop location known for its panoramic ocean views and popular use for wedding ceremonies.

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, customer service-oriented team player with knowledge and experience managing recreation facilities, museums, volunteers, rentals and administering recreation programs and events. A successful incumbent possesses excellent written, oral, and public communication skills and can work independently with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and priorities.
 
The ideal candidate must possess the ability to supervise and delegate assignments to staff, as well as mentoring, inspiring and empowering staff.  The candidate should have strong analytical and writing skills to allow for interpretation of regulations/policies; as well as excellent interpersonal skills enabling the candidate to work cohesively within workgroups.  
 
If you really want to stand out, experience with or the ability to learn point of sale software systems, recreation management systems and museum cataloging systems, including ActiveNet, PastPerfect. Cougar Mountain, and Tyler MUNIS, is highly desirable.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education equivalent to a four-year degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation administration, child development, liberal studies, physical education, public administration, or a closely related field and at least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience directing and supervising significant recreational and/or neighborhood programs and activities, including two (2) years of experience supervising staff and other administrative functions.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.
  • Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate for infant, child, and adult within three (3) months of hire.
