Parks Superintendent

The City of Redding is now accepting applications for the position of Parks Superintendent in the Parks Division.

We are looking for someone to
  • Hire, train, schedule, motivate, develop and evaluate staff. 
  • Establish goals and standards and assign, prioritize and monitor work assignments. 
  • Work with employees to promote optimum performance, correct deficiencies, implement discipline procedures if necessary. 
  • Plan, arrange, schedule and monitor projects for special crews and volunteers. Ensure compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to environmental protection. 
  • Maintain open communication with Director, employees, other City departments/divisions, other public and private agencies, neighbors, and the general public. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Qualifications we're looking for
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices in order to ensure a safe working environment
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in park maintenance and repair
  • Ability to understand and apply City and division policies and procedures, provide effective supervision and quality customer service.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, with a focus on quality service to internal and external customers.

 

Education, Experience and Special Requirements:
  • Typical education would include an Associate in Arts Degree in Ornamental Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or related field, from an accredited college, university or equivalent.
  • Typical experience would include five years of relevant experience in parks landscape maintenance or landscape design and architecture, including two years of progressive supervisory experience.
  • Possession of the appropriate California driver’s license (Class A or B Commercial license is desired), or the ability to acquire one within six months of appointment.
  • It is desired that the person working in this classification possess, or have the ability to obtain, the following certificates and licenses:
    • Pest Control Advisor License (with a minimum of categories A -insects, D - vertebrate pests and E - weeds) as issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture
    • Qualified Applicator Certificate (with a minimum of categories B - landscape maintenance and C- right of way) as issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture
    • Certified Arborist Certification as issued by the International Society of Arboriculture
    • Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification as issued by the National Parks and Recreation Association and National Playground Safety Institute
    • CPR and First Aid Certificates; and a Forklift Operator Certification.

Examination Process: An oral board interview will be administered. 
 

This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill current and future vacancies.

 

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:

  • Positive past employment references.
  • Review of a driver history record
  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check
  • Passing a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test.

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.
