The City of Irwindale, nestled in the vibrant San Gabriel Valley, is proud to offer a dynamic and growing aquatics program at the Irwindale Aquatic Center. Our facility provides swimming lessons, lap swim, water fitness classes, and community events that promote health, safety, and fun for all ages. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Aquatics Assistant to help plan, promote, and coordinate these programs, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Under general supervision, you will support a variety of aquatic activities and perform routine administrative tasks, basic maintenance, and, when needed, lifeguard or swim instruction duties. Examples of Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
 

  1. Assists in developing and expanding new and existing aquatics programs, events, and swim instruction offerings based on community needs and participation trends.
  2. Supports the coordination, scheduling, and implementation of aquatics programs, swim classes, and special events, including interdepartmental events.
  3. Creates and manages all Aquatics Center communications, including updating the website, developing flyers, calendars, and social media content, and managing seasonal marketing; contributes to the City newsletter and other publications.
  4. Performs swim instruction and water safety, when necessary, by teaching swim lessons, enforcing rules, making rescues and rendering First Aid and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); assumes responsibility in cases of incidents.
  5. Assists in the maintenance of aquatic facilities; monitoring pool water chemistry, taking water quality samples and adjusting chemical levels as needed; inspecting and observing facility to ensure maintenance of safety standards, sanitary conditions, and orderly conduct; ensures chemicals, equipment and materials are properly handled and safely stored when not in use; ensures regular and adequate cleaning of the surrounding pool area, lobby, changing rooms, storage areas, chemical room and deck.
  6. Assists in determining, ordering, and maintaining supplies and materials necessary for aquatics programming, facility operations, and events.
  7. Prepares, processes, and inputs staff payroll; assists with employee scheduling and tracks staff hours.
  8. Completes and reconciles daily cash receipts and assists with monitoring program-related expenditures; processes invoices and tracks purchases to ensure budget compliance. Supports in the preparation of aquatics division budget.
  9. Coordinates the annual Spring, Summer, Late Summer and Fall Registration processes, including preparation of materials, scheduling, and training of staff to support a smooth and efficient registration experience.
  10. Oversees and participates in the deep cleaning and upkeep of the Aquatics Center, in coordination with support staff.
  11. Assists in the operation and customer service of the Shark Shack and Rosie’s Treasures, ensuring quality guest experiences and inventory control.
  12. Supports the planning and facilitation of staff training, ensuring staff readiness for programs, safety procedures, and customer service standards.
  13. Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures.
  14. Performs related duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:

  • Operations, services and activities of a public swimming pool, its activities and the aquatics facility.
  • Principles and practices of program administration.
  • Basic principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
  • Principles and practices of public relations.
  • Common recreational and social needs of various age groups.
  • Rules and regulations of the aquatics facility.
  • Principles and practices of swimming, life guarding and water safety.
  • Principles and techniques involved in teaching swimming at all levels.
  • Methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications
  • such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Basic principles of pool equipment and maintenance including pool sanitation and chlorination system. Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.

Ability to:

  • Coordinate the operations of programs and the aquatic facility.
  • Understand the organization and operation of the organization.
  • Prepare clean, concise reports and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Assist with the development of community-based aquatics programs suited to the needs of the community.
  • Plan and organize work to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • React quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Provide proper instruction in swimming and water safety.
  • Exercise sound judgment.
  • Respond to emergency situations and administer first aid and CPR as necessary.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in recreation, physical education, public administration, or a related field.

Experience:
One year of relevant aquatics program experience.

License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license.
Possession of a First Aid certificate.
Possession of a Lifeguard certificate.
Possession of a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate.
Possession of a Water Safety Instruction (WSI).
Possession of a Lifeguard Instructor certificate is highly desirable; must obtain within one year of appointment.
