THE DIVISION
The City of Visalia Urban Forestry Division is part of the Parks and Recreation Department and is responsible for managing and overseeing the maintenance and development of approximately 245 acres of landscaping and lighting districts, as well as City-maintained medians and roadsides, pocket parks, open spaces, City facilities, and parkways.

THE POSITION
The Landscape and Irrigation Technician is responsible for overseeing the development, installation, and maintenance of City-maintained landscape and irrigation systems. This position implements city landscape and irrigation design and maintenance standards for landscaping and lighting districts, open space maintenance districts, roadsides and medians, City facilities, pocket parks, and other publicly owned properties.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be professional, detail-oriented, and well-organized, with strong knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape and irrigation design, water and irrigation management, plan review, construction, and maintenance. The candidate will be proficient in standard office procedures and will perform a variety of administrative functions, including contract management, determining work priorities, and preparing and analyzing project cost estimates.
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the ability to build and maintain cooperative, professional working relationships with developers, contractors, coworkers, other City departments, and the public. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate records and logs and will have experience using standard office equipment, including the ability to operate and learn relevant computer software programs.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
• Three years of experience in irrigation and landscape maintenance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
• Possession of a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.
• Welding certificate is desirable.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
Positions in this class require moderate to heavy physical work with prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and carrying loads weighing between 50 to 95 pounds. Position also involves field work, resulting in exposure to weather.
