Recreation Supervisor - Aquatics
The Recreation Supervisor over the Aquatics Center deals with significant program and administrative responsibilities. The position is assigned to aquatic activities, events and programs and is expected to effectively plan, organize and promote all aspects of the program, including coordination of community resources and supervising numerous temporary and part-time personnel, assists in other recreation events, and performs related work as required.
The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
- Develops, organizes, coordinates, promotes, supervises and reviews operations and activities of the City's aquatic programs
- Makes presentations, recommendations and collaborates with boards and commissions on aquatic education
- Surveys and determines community recreational and leisure interests
- Determines programs, activities and events to be offered and establishes specific program goals and objectives
- Establishes guidelines and procedures for employees and program participants
- Develops marketing and informational literature related to specific aquatic programs
- Determines personnel needs
- Trains, evaluates and assigns duties to program employees
- Recruits and coordinates volunteers
- Handles complaints or concerns relative to the aquatic program areas
- Constructs program schedules, activity schedules, and personnel work schedules
- Creates and maintains good public relations
- Conducts in-service training programs and hears personnel grievances
- Instructs all employees concerning liability
- Makes periodic inspections of the facility and reports needed repairs
- May be required to serve as a Lifeguard/Pool Cashier
- May be required to service as a Water Safety Instructor
- Conducts swim meets, shows, exhibitions, and clinics
- Maintains records related to pool operations
- Supervises the bookkeeping and disposition of receipts
- Oversees assigned facility maintenance duties
- Makes pool tests, and establishes procedures to be followed when an accident occurs
- Oversees tasks related to equipment and requests replacement of equipment and supplies as needed
- Develops and administers budget accounts relative to the pool program areas
- Evaluates and makes recommendations in regard to facility modifications, construction and equipment purchase
- Prepares grant and special funding application components and reports; attends conferences, meetings, and participates in various organizations and committees pertaining to recreation/aquatics
- Acts as adviser to various groups
- Performs a wide variety of assigned administrative staff work and related work as required.

- Philosophy, principles and techniques of public recreation programs
- Principles of personnel selection, supervision, training and evaluation
- Public relations principles and practices
- Procedures and techniques of budget preparation and administration
- Principles of recreation safety and first aid techniques
- Modern office methods, practices, procedures and equipment
- English usage, spelling, grammar punctuation.
ABILITY TO:
- Plan, organize, and lead others in implementing a City's aquatics program
- Schedule recreation programs and facilities
- Interpret community needs and adapt to designated program assignments
- Promote community interests in recreation
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices
- Understand and carry out oral and written instruction
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Work effectively in a high-paced. multi-tasked environment
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in recreation or a related field AND at least one (1) year of responsible, professional experience in recreation management with demonstration of effective facility management, recreation programming, facilitation of contracts, sponsorship management, marketing, and promotions.  Experience working with a public agency is highly desirable.  Bilingual skills is also desirable.
LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of a valid and appropriate: California Driver's License; CPR for the professional Rescuer; First Aid certification; and Lifeguard Training Certificate.  Possession of, or ability to obtain within probationary period, Lifeguard Instructor Certificate and Water Safety Certificate, and Certified Pool Operators Certification.  The following certifications also desirable within one year of hire: Instructor Trainer for Water Safety Instruction; Therapeutic Water Exercise Certification; and Title 22 Instructor Certification.
