Aquatics Specialist

Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator and/or Supervisor, the Aquatics Specialist is responsible for the on-site supervision of aquatics staff and assisting in multiple aquatics programs at both the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center and The Centennial Recreation Center.  Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

Applicants must be willing to work outside in a variety of weather conditions. This position is roughly 25-30 hours a week in the off-season and 30-40 hours a week in the summer.

Salary
The salary range for this position is $27-$30 per hour.  This is a year-round, part time position.


Position Description 
The  Aquatics Specialist will be assigned multiple job duties based on experience to support our Aquatics Supervisor and Coordinator in administrative duties. Examples of duties may include managing staff schedules and trainings, communicating with members, guests and program participants, assisting with data entry and record keeping, assisting with staff recruitments, marketing of new and existing programs, and may serve as a lead for the swim team program, and/or swim lessons. Starting rate varies and is dependent on relevant experience and possession of certifications.

Examples of Duties

  • Direct responsibility for administrative functions as designated by the Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor.
  • Responsible for maintaining the safety of all participants and staff.
  • Open and closes facility and performs pool chemical checks, and set-up of facility.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and supervise aquatics staff.
  • Recruit and train aquatics staff.
  • Recruit and promote aquatics programs.
  • Lead Aquatics Center in-services and trainings.
  • Certify lifeguards in Red Cross Lifeguard Training classes
  • Receive the public in a positive manner and explain routine procedures and practices; provide positive customer service contacts; maintain effective working relationships; work cooperatively with Aquatics Center teammates and customers.
  • Enforce all aquatic rules; ensure cleanliness and safety of aquatic facilities; assist in light janitorial duties.
  • Ensure that all safety equipment is in stock, at the appropriate location, and in good working conditions at all times.
  • Order supplies as needed for pool operations.
  • Perform rescues, administer first aid, perform CPR, and summon supervisors and emergency personnel as required for injuries or other medical emergencies.
  • Evaluate operations and put together reports.  Maintain accurate records and ensure proper completion of reports by subordinates.
  • Fill out necessary incident and attendance reports and other forms as required.
  • Ability to perform all duties of a Lead Lifeguard and Lifeguard.
  • Plans, organizes, assigns, reviews, evaluates, and directs the work of aquatics personnel.
  • Report complaints, special requests, safety conditions, security issues and illegal activities, and resolves issues within scope of authority. 
  • Evaluates programs and participates in meetings to discuss and appraise program techniques and content; recommends changes in staffing, program objectives, policies and procedures to assure maximum effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Work as a part of the Aquatics Center Management team to oversee overall facility functioning.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of four years as a Lifeguard or Swim Coach
  • Minimum of two years in an aquatics supervisory role

Licenses/Certificates:

  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard certificate is required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire date 
  • Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certificate is required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire date
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor is desired
  • Certified Pool Operator is desired

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods, and practices for organized aquatic and recreation programs; principles of effective supervision and evaluation of staff; techniques for effectively dealing with the public, both in person and over the telephone; Aquatics Center rules and regulations.

Skill in:

  • Planning, organizing, directing, and supervising staff; interpreting and implementing policies and procedures; learning and adapting to changing priorities and multiple demands; effectively communicating; displaying outstanding customer service skills by providing information and assistance to customers in an effective manner.

Special Requirements: 

  • Position requires availability of 25-30 hours a week in the off-season and 30-40 hours a week in the summer.  Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.  Applicants must be physically capable of sustained walking, standing, or climbing.  Applicants must be willing to wear City of Morgan Hill Lifeguard uniforms and swim wear.
