Director of Parks and Recreation
The City of Chula Vista is seeking a highly motivated Director of Parks and Recreation to plan, organize, direct and review the activities and operations of the Parks and Recreation Department, including recreation, community centers, sports fields and courts, recreational trails, aquatics, gazebos and picnic areas, and senior services; coordinate assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies; and provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Manager.
The major areas of responsibility are:
- Plan, organize, direct and review the activities and operations of the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Develop, plan and implement department goals and objectives.
- Develop and administer the department budget.
- Oversee the department’s human and financial resources including organizational and staff development.
- Develop and implement the department work plan; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
- Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct through subordinate supervisors the development and implementation of a variety of programs and services to the community; evaluate existing programs to determine effectiveness; and recommend improvements in service delivery.
- Work closely with commissions, and City and community officials to provide technical assistance and advice; research, prepare, and present oral and written reports to City Council; the Parks and Recreation Commission; and other commissions, committees and boards.
- Develop partnerships with community organizations, businesses, schools, other public agencies and non–profit organizations within the Chula Vista area.
- Research funding sources and implement fundraising efforts; oversee grant application preparation.
Qualified candidates, at minimum, will have the equivalent of seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation, parks programming, community services, or other related field, including four years of administrative and management responsibility, and training equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Recreation Administration, Public
Administration, Business Administration or a related field.
