The City of San Rafael’s Library and Recreation Department is seeking an Assistant Library and Recreation Director to serve as a visionary leader and exemplary project manager. This is an at-will, leadership position that reports directly to the Library and Recreation Director and contributes to oversight of a budget of approximately $8 million and 26 full-time employees. This position allows for a great deal of autonomy and independence, with responsibilities including resolving community members’ inquiries, directing the implementation of Division goals, and interpreting policies and procedures, as well as serving in the Director role as needed. This role requires a blend of interpersonal skills and technical expertise, as the successful candidate will represent the Division in meetings, explain written reports, and resolve complicated issues. The Assistant Library & Recreation Director (Recreation & Childcare Division) will provide complex assistance to the Director of Library and Recreation while exercising a strong leadership ability, project management capabilities, and attention to detail. This individual will have direct oversight of recreation and childcare staff and a great deal of autonomy and independence. Responsibilities include oversight of assigned programs and facilities, ensuring the Division’s ongoing goals and objectives are met, and presenting reports to City Council and City Staff. This individual will also support many administrative functions, such as formulating policies and procedures, preparing the Division’s budget, assessing service needs, and maintaining systems operations records.

The ideal candidate is someone who can effectively manage many projects at once while acting as a resource to their team and the public. Ideally, this professional would have an in-depth knowledge of public recreation and childcare practices, change management, and providing excellent customer service. Public-speaking and presentation skills are also important, as are strong interpersonal skills when interacting with stakeholders, outside agencies, and the public. Solving problems with a creative mindset is essential to this role, as is being able to negotiate resolutions and come to a team consensus. Successful candidates are those who are organized, resourceful, take initiative, and have the flexibility to adapt to challenging assignments. Someone who displays enthusiasm and an effective service attitude will excel in this role.



Any combination of experience, education, and training that would provide the ability to perform the typical tasks required. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

•    Five (5) years of relevant professional experience including at least three (3) years of management-level responsibility including the supervision of professional, technical, and support staff.

•    Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university.

•    Any recent training, such as academic courses and certification programs, that are relevant to this job classification.


Salary and Benefits: Annual Salary: $119,316 - $145,032 annually DOQ/DOE and an attractive benefits package.
