RECREATION ASSISTANT II SENIOR CENTER – PART-TIME REGULAR (MINIMUM 32 HOURS PER WEEK WITH BENEFITS)

Part-time/Classified (Subject to Probation)

Under the general direction and supervision of the Recreation Manager, Recreation Supervisor, and Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Assistant II implements, oversees, and schedules Senior Center programs, activities, and events of the City of Malibu Community Services Department. This supervisory position assists with the general operations of the Senior Center by enforcing rules and regulations, applying policies and guidelines, and preparing for the facility's daily operation with minimal supervision. Support the Department's general operations, which may include working on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate should have experience working with older adults in addition to planning, coordinating, and marketing recreation programs for older adults. The Recreation Assistant II will support Department staff and supervise part-time staff by appropriately delegating tasks, scheduling, and overseeing projects. The ideal candidate will work cooperatively with outside organizations such as the Malibu Library, Dial-A-Ride transportation provider, health professionals, and County or State representatives. The Recreation Assistant II will professionally explain and enforce Department rules and regulations governing facilities, parks, and programs. The ideal candidate will have leadership, organization, critical thinking, and multi-tasking skills; using English effectively to communicate, both orally and in writing, and will display a positive attitude and ability to provide excellent customer service to the general public, contractors, and City staff.  Must work a minimum of 32 hours to receive benefits.  

Vacation Leave

1 - 5 years - 77 hours per year.
6- 10 years - 96 hours per year.
11 years or more - 128 hours per year.

Sick Leave
77 hours per year

Holidays
16 fixed holidays per year (which includes the Winter Closure from December 24th to January 1st, where City Hall is closed).

Retirement
The City participates in the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). New members to CalPERS, new PEPRA formula 2% at 62, three-year average, 8.25% member contribution; classic CalPERS members 2% at 55, one-year average, the City pays the member contribution for classic CalPERS members. The City does not contribute to Social Security.

Insurance
Health, Dental, Long Term/Short Term Disability, Life and Vision Insurance are all covered. Health Insurance: A selection of health plans are available from CalPERS. City will provide 100% paid premiums-coverage for employee and dependents up to the PERS Platinum PPO health plan level. Dental and Vision: 100% paid premiums-coverage for employee and dependents.

Deferred Compensation
A voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan is available for employee participation. The City will match up to $50.00 per pay period of a contribution to our 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.

Credit Union
Employees have the option to sign up with the Ventura County Federal Credit Union.

Additional Benefits
Employee Assistance Program; Tuition Reimbursement ($2,500 per fiscal year).

Probation
New hire and promotional appointments shall be subject to a probationary period of not less than six months.

Medicare
Federal law requires mandatory contribution for each employee of 1.45%.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications Required

Minimum of three (3) years of responsible prior experience in related recreational activities and experience in personnel and facility management. Graduation from an accredited four-year university or enrolled in college is highly desirable. Candidate must be at least 18 years old. Completion of high school diploma or equivalent. Certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and Standard First Aid upon hire. ServSafe Food Safety Certification is highly desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge of
- Recreation programming including community classes, cultural arts, day camps, seniors and special events.
- Concepts, principles and practices of parks and recreation programs, activities and events.
- General facility and parks operations.
- Part-time staff supervision.
- Computer applications including the Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of the Adobe software suite preferred.
- Standard office administrative procedures including the use of standard office equipment.

Skills in
- Providing strong support for recreation programs, activities and events.
- Displaying a positive attitude and ability to provide excellent customer service to the general public, contractors and City staff.
- Following written and verbal direction from supervisory staff.
- Leadership, organization, critical thinking and multi-tasking.
- Punctuality, initiative and common sense.
- Using English to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with the general public, contractors and City staff.
- Understanding and ability to enforce and abide by City and School District policies while utilizing strong decision-making ability.
- Maintaining safety, cleanliness and general order of recreational facilities.
